Jason Bereswill: Rocks at Masterworks

  • Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art Camden Paget Bermuda (map)

Jason Bereswill begins his process by painting outdoors, typically in morning light, and almost always kneeling on the sand.  These on-site oil studies are an hour-long gaze during which the day’s developing light reveals sturdy rock, glimmering water, and unaffected beach. These are uninhabited scenes.  The elements depicted are all vibrantly alive, setting the picture for you to be the first to enter.  That desire for escape into or out of
Painting is a consistent thread through much of Bereswill’s work and in his Caribbean paintings especially. They suggest a vacation paradise in solitude where the desire for privacy outweighs the desire to be seen.  As his process unfolds on site, the time spent with the rocks he depicts provides him with a portal for engaging with the origins of the Earth through a 21st Century lens.
He carries his plein-air studies back to the studio, along with copious photographic reference to begin merging details of color, light, form, and texture onto large scale canvases. Where his effort to bring painted life to the forces that shape the island begins anew.
